University Department of Education for Health Professionals (UDEHP)
INFORMATION BROCHURE FOR
M.Sc. in HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION
[M.Sc. (HPE)] PROGRAM
In the modern era,
Health Care systems worldwide face new challenges that call for new
responses. The Health Professionals Education has to reach beyond
the mere teaching and learning of medicine, rather it must be made
relevant, efficient, effective and responsive to societal needs and
aspirations. Over the last 16 years, the Department of Medical
Education (DOME) of J. N. Medical College, Belgaum has been a
pioneer in this direction. It has conducted a number of workshops on
Educational Technology and Research Methodology for various streams
of health professionals including eleven International Workshops in
collaboration with the Department of Medical Education (DME) of the
College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), USA.
Established in 1959, the DME of UIC is the oldest such department in
the world and has been in the forefront of training and mentoring
educational leadership in countries across the world. The World
Health Organization has designated DME as a collaborating center for
education with emphasis on leadership development.
With the
establishment of the KLE University (KLEU) in 2006, DOME has been
upgraded as the University Department of Education for Health
Professionals (UDEHP). It is the endeavor of KLEU-UDEHP to develop
human resources in the health professions to meet these new
challenges and aspirations of the community in the new millennium.
UDEHP has conducted a number of educational training programs for
the health professionals since its inception in the year 2007.
The national
agencies responsible for prescribing policy and regulating higher
education including professional education in India such as the
University Grants Commission, Medical Council of India, Dental
Council of India, All India Council for Technical Education,
Pharmacy Council of India, Nursing Council of India and
Rehabilitation Council of India have advocated the need for
developing human resources in the domain of health professions
education. However, at present, the training opportunities are
limited to workshops and fellowships. What is lacking is a
full-fledged Masters Program that will enable comprehensive training
of faculty of health professional educational institutions. It is in
this context that KLEU-UDEHP in collaboration with
UIC-DME,
with their vast experience and commitment to the development of
Educational Leadership, are launching the Masters in Health
Professional Education (MHPE) program.
